Very sad news

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Paul Hester, the drummer for Crowded House as well as Split Enz’ last album, took his life on Saturday in Melbourne. As I’ve mentioned in several shows in the past, Crowded House was a band that was a favorite of mine.

This week’s Tuesday night show will be a fond and positive tribute to Paul and his contributions to the Finn-fronted bands, and will include both cover songs and Hester-penned originals.

“Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Eels (popularized by Elvis Presley)

“Heartbreak Hotel” – John Cale (originally by Elvis Presley)

“Show Biz Kids” – Rickie Lee Jones (originally Steely Dan)

She was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar…

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

MusicAustraliaGuide: “Garbage singer Shirley Manson has teamed up with namesake Marilyn Manson to record a duet of Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me Baby?” but there are no plans to release it…”

Whoa.

If anyone out there has any connections, and can get this as a “Coverville World Premiere” (with permission, naturally), I’ll sew you an official Coverville afghan. Or buy you a Coverville baseball cap.

Coverville 62: Irish covers to end your St. Patrick’s Day

Thursday, March 17th, 2005

Coverville is sponsored by iPodderX. Feed your iPod by getting your copy of the #1 podcasting Macintosh client today at iPodderX.com!

Yes, tonight it’s mostly Irish bands covering popular music (except for one Swedish band covering an Irish song…) And no U2. Don’t get me wrong. I like U2. But surely you know that there are a lot of other great Irish bands out there besides Bono and the boys. But don’t take my word for it, listen to tonight’s show. Here’s what you’ll hear when you do:

“We Have All The Time In The World” – My Bloody Valentine (popularized by Louis Armstrong)

“Secret Love” – Sinead O’Connor (standard, popularized by Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and others)

“Does Your Mother Know” – Ash (originally ABBA)

“Honky Tonk Woman” – The Pogues (originally The Rolling Stones)

“I Need Love” – Luka Bloom (originally L L Cool J)

“The Boys Are Back In Town” – The Cardigans (originally Thin Lizzy)

We had joy, we had fun….

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

Here’s a little history on Terry Jacks’ “Seasons In The Sun” – that bleary ballad from 1974. Look for various versions of the song in future shows…including the original French version.

Seasons In The Sun

Thanks to Dave and Todd for letting me know about this!
