I like both versions, and the Rufus Wainwright version done for the Shrek soundtrack. That said, you should check out the a cappella one done by the Freshman Fifteen on their album Game Time.

Ok…after starting this off on such a negative vibe I had to go back with an open mind and listen to the various versions. (actually got suckered into it by hearing the Cohen version while watching Watchmen)

After further review I'll have to go with John Cale of the above choices.
