I was just about to mention “Sundown” by Elwood, and you’ve gone and played a version by the Smithereens! Haven’t listened to it yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Listen to the Elwood version, and then you can let me know if it should actually be considered a cover or not. Whatever, I love it.

Yes, agree with this. I recommended it recently as a good, but often unheard of Beatles cover and i think someone mentioned The Music Man in the forums.
Meant to say, the album “meet the Beatles” was a USA only hybrid release, derived from the original Uk release “With the Beatles” mostly.
The UK release of “with the Beatles from 1963 did NOT contain “I want to hold your hand”, and in fact most of the Beatles singles did not feature on albums (yes, they were THAT good they did not need singles to promote the albums!).
In the UK, to get the complete discography, you have to get the albums and the Past Masters vol 1 and 2 CD’s.

It is slightly irritating that, in the USA, the fact that Capitol came to the party late should mean that the Beatles are seen to have “arrived” post-Kennedy in 1964, when the UK had already been enjoying the Beatles since 1962 and had enjoyed two albums already and four singles – “Love me do”, “please please me”, “from me to you” and “she loves you”.
All 4 were unreleased in the USA I believe.
This was a terrific show, except for Pat’s dissing of current bands. There are some fantastic bands out there these days that are much better than crap bands that were playing 20-30 years ago.
The Raconteurs, Hot Hot Heat, New Pornographers, etc. are outstanding power pop groups.
When I was the Music Director of our college radio station in 1985 or ’86, this girl named Roxanne tried to get me to put a song into rotation by her boyfriend’s band. I listened to it. It was good, but didn’t really fit in with the Scritti Politti and Doug E. Fresh that we were playing. It was kind of “60’s sounding” in a way. Good rock, but just not right. I never put it on, and she never forgave me…
Rolling Stone magazine would name the band Best New Artist of 1986.

And, I spent the next 10 years buying and listening to EVERY album they put out, memorizing ever work. I LOVE THE SMITHEREENS.

Yes, Pat, you were right to diss today’s music. And that of the 90s as well. The death of music came in late 1988. Ah, well, long live the obscure 80s. Or maybe I got old. Thanks for another great show though.
I would’ve liked to have heard if DiNizio has favorite cover versions of Smithereens songs… did you ask and not include the answer?
