Thanks for the shout-out Brian, but I have to correct you – Spider recorded "Better be good to me" and that was the song you played before (and Tina Turner didn't have to change a thing!). Holly Knight was the singer and Holly also co-wrote "Simply The best", which is where the Spider/Holly Knight connection comes in. Of course "The Best" is also a cover, as Bonnie Tyler recorded it in 1988 a year before Tina…future show…? They were from New York too, though that might be a suburb of London or something 🙂
Strangely, that Erma Franklin track has always been known to me and features on a lot of Soul compilations here – If you had asked me who recorded it, i'd have said Erma and not Janis Joplin!
And I still can't get "About a boy" out of my head with any version of "killing me softly" 🙂
A mention on Coverville – WAY cool!
consider this a request for your next originalville: I just learned that the big hit by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss titled GONE GONE GONE, was originally recorded by the Everly Brothers. I found the original on Walk Right Back: The Everly Brothers On Warner Bros. 1960 to '69 on Rhapsody.
