Here are a couple good tunes for this week’s battle: Petra Haden’s all-a cappella version vs. Shane Searles’ terrific power pop rocker. Two very different versions

They show up in iTunes under Coverville. I'm subscribed to the AAC feed, if it matters.
I've always loved the Petra Haden version, I know it's corny but it is allocated as a ringtone when wife phones.
I absolutely HATE Petra Haden's style of a capella. I'd rather hear someone sing a capella alone, no overdubs. On the contrary, guitar driven powerpop is about my favorite style of music…Matthew Sweet, Marshall Crenshaw, XTC, Jason Falkner, etc. So this one is a clear win for Shane Searles from me.
Petra's talented, but she basically did a vocal version of the Beach Boys instrumental arrangement – she sang the sheet music instead of doing something original. Searles' version was ok I guess… but it was also a little too formulaic for my taste. I like a cover that gives me a fresh ear on the original, and both of these versions gave only what you'd expect and nothing more.
FWIW, I LOVE these WDIB bits on the Coverville feed!
I usually like Petra Haden, but this one didn't do a thing for me.
I knew I'd absolutely be voting for Petra until Shane's version started. Awesome.
I'm a fan of overdubbed vocal a cappella stuff, vote for Petra Hayden. (Although Ben Folds' self-cover of Effington is still my favourite).
I'm really enjoying WDIB each week – looking forward to many more!
