Here’s what’s on the show tonight:
Title (with link to iTunes, if available) | Artist (with link to the artists’ website, if available) | Album (with link to Amazon.com, if available) | Original Artist |
Satellite of Love | Lisa Richards | Mad Mad Love | Lou Reed |
Tropicalia | Elaine Elias | Around The City | Beck |
Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town | Doug Kilishek | Submission | Mel Tillis/Kenny Rogers |
Paperback Writer | The Naomi Star | Sunshine Girl | Beatles |
Redemption Song | Daphne Rubin-Vega | Redepmtion Songs-DRVII | Bob Marley |
All Along The Watchtower | Kimo Watanabe | Backyard Music | Bob Dylan |
Come As You Are | Keith Moore | Keith-Moore.net | Nirvana |
Lisa Richard’s voice could be compared to one of my favorite jazz singers, Blossom Dearie. And that’s not a bad thing.
Daphne Rubin-Vega wasn’t in Rocky Horror Picture Show. Magenta was played by Patricia Quinn.
She was part of the 2000 Broadway revival of the Rocky Horror Show (not the Rocky Horror Picture Show movie).
Say, do any of you know the Madison?
Brian,
Thanks for another great show.
I wanted to flip a quick email about my experience with the show and to let you know it inspires me beyond the 6 or 7 tracks you play each show.
I listened to the show and really loved the Watchtower cover. Must have played it 5 or 6 times. I finally visited your site to post a comment and was distracted by the Kimo Watanabe link in the show notes and followed it to the youtube video. That lead me to do a search for other Watchtower listings and one of the first I came across was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj2MkM7Lga0 (check it out its awesome!). That song (by Keziah Jones) and its style led me to limewire to check out a few more tracks which finally led me to itunes to buy the full album (and I’m on my way to my record store to get another one).
In 2 hours I’d gone from Episode 256 to some brand new music (to me) from Keziah Jones. None of it would have happened with out your 34 minutes of music!
Thanks again!
Tim
Still not caught the show, so apologies if I’m not on the right track, but by “The Madison” do you mean the song “The Madison time” featured in the John Waters movie “Hairspray”?
This was by The Ray Bryant Combo
Or I have another version called “The Madison” on a CD called “Land of a 1000 dances” (all the old 50’s and 60’s dances) by Al Tunetoppers Brown.
Hi, my name is Brad Majors, and this is my fiancee, Janet Weiss; ah… you are…?
How do you do? I see you’ve met my faithful handyman.
Whatever happened to Saturday night?
I think the Dire Straits influence on “Come as you are” was related to the guitar work at the end. I spotted a couple of licks Keith has borrowed from their 1982 album “Love over gold”
“The King” has also done a fab version of this song in his wonderful 70’s-Elvis style!
Hi Brian,
I´m a listener way down from the south of South America (Uruguay) and I really enjoy your podcast. Lots of gems and an really open mind. This is just to point you to the original version of “Tropicalia”: it was composed and performed in 1967 by Caetano Veloso and his version is worth checking out. Keep on working, keep on surprising us with your findings. Lots of luck
Carlos
Hi Carlos,
Are you sure that Caetano’s “Tropicalia” is the same song as Beck’s? I’ve listened to both, and I don’t think they are. I could be wrong, but I think they’re two different songs.
