Great show Brian, although “Thats Just the way it is” would have been my #1. Just shows my comment on the earlier show saying “it might be the song snippets” was right, this show wasn’t the least bit painful to listen to 🙂
I vote that you play the entire song for the next Coverville Idol. If people don’t want to listen to the whole song, they can fast forward. Maybe tell how long the song is before you play it that way listeners will know how long to fast forward.
I listen to your show on a portable MP3 player, so I know I won’t go to the trouble of going to a separate web page to listen to each song individually.
Hi. For some reason, I can’t login to the forums, which is frustrating, but I’m working on dealing with that pain right now. In the meantime I though I’d drop some feedback over here.
Brian, I think this show idea is a great one. It was a pleasure to take part in such an inclusive and good hearted competition. It’s like the board game I’ve always wanted.
Format wise, I’d prefer to hear each song in full, it’s only fair to the song, as you mentioned several of the songs climax or have key parts towards the end. If someone knows for sure they think a song is a stinker, well if they are tech savvy enough to be downloading podcasts, then they can handle fast-forwarding. I’d prefer that than have each song individually downloadable. Keep it as a cohesive show is my vote. Thats what podcasts are.
Personally, I was looking forward to having actual judge feedback after each track, and think that could be fun if you want to give it another go.
If you have a lot more submissions this go-round you might want to make it two shows. Or maybe make some cuts. Or have a cuts show where you play parts of the songs that didn’t make it and talk about why they didn’t make it with some judges. Not in a mean way, but in a “it was too close to original” or “production wasn’t up to snuff” kind of way.
I think that does it for my feedback. Congrats to everyone who submitted a song. I’m looking forward to the 1973 edition, both participating and listening.
Brian,
I like the concept and think the artists submitted some great songs here. I did not enjoy the first Coverville Idol show much, primarily due to the shortened song clips.
My suggestion, for what it’s worth, is to spread the competition out over several shows. Maybe play a track at the end on shows where you don’t have a musically challenged and let us all give it a yes/no or 1-10 rating. After all the songs have been voted on take the top 4 or 5 and replay them for a final vote.

Firstly, having listened again today to the full tracks, the Fritters are totally Simon and Garfunkel!
I loved the Seu & Samie track and gave it a 5, but it was really close and I also really enjoyed the winning song.
As for the format, I’d agree that the full track should be played and that live opinions from real judges would be good, though I personally enjoyed the Simon Cowell clips for one show only.
Tell you what I’d do. Arrange with a label to sponsor the show (our friends at Not Lame for example) plus sponsors for prizes and have the winner chosen from, say 5 rounds. The winner would receive a years contract from Not Lame for support/guidance and some studio time and the show could be marketed to the press to gather support/exposure. I’m sure a package could be put together by the Sponsor that is big in assistance but light on the pocket. Guidance would be useful to the unsigned.
This would work well for the sponsor, Coverville and the winner – a “win, win” scenario some would say.
Great show, as usual!
I find it interesting, though, that the winning entry was almost identical to the a capella version of “Walk Like an Egyptian” that The Bangles themselves did on a compilation called Modern A Capella.
Keep up the great work!

Great show! Why isn’t there any links on this show to Amazon.com (or such) to buy the record?
