Hey Brian – love the show. If you have any cool Dylan covers, I’d like to hear them. While I think it’s good that Dylan insists on recording his own stuff, I think sometimes other people can bring more out of them.
Also would love to hear any Neil Young y’got.
Thanks again!

Great program. Have you heard The Dirtbombs’ ‘Ultraglide In Black’? Awesome album of covers. My favourite is their cover of Brian Eno’s ‘King’s Lead Hat’.
The Dirtbombs seem to be more known here in Australia than their native Detroit, but they’re still fairly obscure.
They have two drummers that play simultaneously!
Brian:
Nice cover of “River Deep, Mountain High.” My favorite cover of the song is by Eric Burdon and the Animals. If you have it, I’d love to hear it again. (One of these days I’ll get my turntable fixed.) Eric bends one of the lyrics in a way that fixes the song in the late 60s: “I love you, baby, like a flower needs the spring; I love you, baby, like Aretha Franklin needs to sing.” Yeah!
You added nicely to my train of consciousness by following “River Deep,” which made me think of the Animals, with “Little Red Riding Hood.” originally recorded by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs. The way that fit together for me is that Sam the Sham was one of the American singers who re-imported the sound of Brit Invasion singers like Eric Burdon, Mick Jagger and early Van Morrison (when he was with Them) who lifted their styles from American soul singers.
OK, I know that’s convoluted. But it was part of the way the sounds kept criss-crossing the Atlantic in the mid-60s.
Another excellent show. Brian, you set the gold standard for podcasting.
You may want to note that the vocals on I Feel Love are from Annette Strean of Venus Hum. She’s the singer, Venus Hum is the band she’s in.
I love that track.
General comment:
The RSS feed for entries has the number of the show, but now date. This show is 47 for example.
The .mp3 file’s filename and id3 tags has the date, but doesn’t have the show number. This show is 050130.
Would make figuring out what shows I’ve heard (or want to hear again) easier.
An alternative, which might be nice too, is to label the shows with a theme. Like “Coverville Live” or “Dylan Covers”. That might have more long term meaning than show 47 (or was it show 45).
Love the stuff. It’s one of the few podcasts I’ll keep listening too.
My first listen– great mix. Check out 999 and their cover of Lil Red Riding Hood.
How about Stranglers doing Walk on By.
Hey Brian, Have you heard the Blondie cover of the T. Rex song Bang a Gong (Get It On)? It’s just awesome. It’s a live version that’s a bonus track on the Parallel Lines CD. It might be a good song for your show.
Hi Brian,
I just discovered your show, and have been listening to your January shows all day. Thanks so much for the great podcast! Funnily, just a few days ago I was creating playlists of my favorite cover songs. (I’ve got one with 10 versions of “Across the Universe.” )
I’ve been looking for a couple of covers I used to have on cassette: The Psych Furs covering “Alabama Song”, and Phranc’s tongue-in-cheek take on “I Enjoy Being A Girl.” If you have either one, could you play it sometime?
keep up the great work,
Dan
If you ever do a Stones cover show, I’d like to request Cat Power covering Satisfaction. Thanks!
Thanks for playing Eva Cassidy. She has a really great voice and, unfortunetly, a tragic story.
Nice take off on Supertramp with your new header graphic
Not sure where to make requests, but the former frontman for Soul Coughing, Mike Doughty (http://superspecialquestions.com) does a seriously slick cover of “Real Love” originally done by Mary J Blige.
