Dear Brian,
I have only been listening to your podcasts for about a week but I was impressed by your knowledge of the artists and the covers HOWEVER Lost Fingers version of "Pump Up the Jam" is NOT by M.A.R.R.S. ("Pump Up the Volume") but by Technotronic feat. Ya-Kid K. Keep it up, though.
Whoops – lame mistake on my part. Shownotes fixed.
State of shock with mcjagger better, mercury's voice gets buried under Jackson's voice.
LOVED that Pump up the Jam cover and the Manics cover. 80's fantastic!!
Oh, and the very best of luck with the concert Brian. I am sad to be unable to attend this show.
Wayne
Hey Brian! Thanks for the lost fingers track! Keep on the great work!
I have "State of Shock" on 45 rpm! I think I like the Jagger version more, although it does make just about as much sense being Freddy's work. Sheesh… I can't imagine Mercury and Jackson in the studio together!
So where was the Mercury version of "State of Shock" released? Was it commercially available? Ever make it to CD?
I don't think it was ever released.
Claire, good choice! And for the rest of you, if you enjoyed the Toxic Audio track, you can catch more of them over at The Acapodcast (acapodcast.com). Brian, you should definitely check them out if you have the chance. You're right in thinking that they put on a fabulous show, especially the always funny Mr. Tim (Jones) formerly of moosebutter.
I love Susan Tedeschi, great performer. Cool person. I first saw her about 3-4 years ago at this small outdoor venue at a vineyard in Saratoga, CA, she was opening for Etta James. My cousin, his wife and I raced out there and made it with 30 minutes to spare, but found out there was no parking up at that venue. We had to park about 3 miles away at this community college, with only 2 small buses going back and forth. Needless to say, I missed half of Susan's set, I was really angry I missed a whole set.
After the show, all the people who came by bus, had to leave by bus, we knew it would be an hour before the line started to move. So my cousin and I walked around and found a tour bus with the Mets/Yankees game playing on ESPN. I was trying to see the score when the window opened and it was Susan Tedeschi. She asked us if we wanted to know the score to the ball game. When she was breaking the game down, my first thought was, wow, this person knows baseball, then my second thought was, It's Susan! So I told her my story about missing half her show and she sympathized, and I felt vindicated. About a year later, I saw her in SF, and I had her sign two of my cd's, and she remembered me. Like I said, I think she is one cool person.
Pump up the Jam was done in the style popularised by Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. It' s sometimes referred to as "Gypsy jazz".
