WoW, amazing, I love All green 🙂
just amazing. wow. incredible. thanks Brian for such a great show today. i've listened to this episode 4 times in a row now.
As soon as I heard the words "Al Green Cover Story" the first thing I thought was Living Colour. Well done.
And I'm one of those people who knows Jimmy Barnes only from the Lost Boys soundtrack so if you ever find a way to include him in more shows, that would be great.
Long live Reverend Al!
Cold Chisel was such a good band with so many great songwriters that Jimmy Barnes solo always was a disappointment in comparison. This was a pretty good cover though. Jimmy Barnes is currently hosting a show on cable in Australia called "My First Gig" where he chats with another singer and sings with them. It's like a low key version of Elvis Costello's Spectacle (no audience). I've only seen the first show where he interviews Neil Finn and they sing Lola together but it was pretty good and I'm looking forward to the rest of the shows.
I don't think its streaming but the upcoming guests are listed here http://www.maxtv.com.au/max/promo/my-first-gig/
I've been listening to past shows for about a week or so. I decided to check in today and I'm SO GLAD I did. An Al Green show! Yay! Thanks SO much, Brian. Coverville is the joint!
I had to stop rewind and relisten to this episode because I wasn't sure I heard something, but it seemed that I could hear Al Green in the covers by the other artists. No matter how far they took their arrangements, it seemed that I good hear strains of Al Greens versions playing alongside or underneath the covers. Then I realized something, its the power of the man and his singular sound. An Al Green song is an Al Green song no matter who covers it. He was even able to take a couple of other iconic artists and turn their tunes into his. Its not something even the great artists can do very often. Kudos to Brian for another excellent episode, and kudos also to the reverend Al Green for being such an innovator in music.
I'm listening to it for the third time. I love Al's cover of the Doors' "Light My Fire." If I don't already have this in my collection, I'm gonna buy it before the day's through! 🙂
The cover of Let's Stay Together is amazing. Thanks for sharing, Brian.
Purchased that AG cover of "Light My Fire" AND Obadiah Parker's "The Tip Jar" ep. I already had "Hey Ya!" but "Let's Stay Together" is so nice! I also ended up adding more AG songs to my mp3 player. I could listen to him all day! This site is making me spend money! *smile*
One of the best Covervilles yet. If it weren't for that godawful unlistenable mangling by Living Colour it might have been THE best.
If this were a fabric, it would be velvet!
The Commitments version of "Take me to the river" must have been a strong contender too, a little Belfast soul!
Most excellent show, indeed. I wasn't terribly familiar with Al Green by name before this show, but hearing the songs made me realise just how many of his songs I am actually familiar with…nicely done!
Go, cousin Al! (Kidding, but a standard joke I've used.)
An Al Green cover story that doesn’t include Big Sugar’s version of I’m A Ram isn’t truly complete. Maybe on another episode of Coverville?
