Tonight you’ll hear music by the Barenaked Ladies, Maroon 5, Trina Hamlin, Phranc, The Bad Plus, and an uncovered gem by Tanita Tikaram. Mmmm – good stuff on the show tonight.

bingo, bango, bongo! great podcast!!
Thanks for the support of the site, and as always, thanks for a killer podcast. It was fun to hear the pre-marron 5 stuff.
Keep it up!
Oddly, although Brian talked about Maroon 5’s past life, the track ‘If I Fell’ comes from Maroon 5’s latest album 1.22.03 Acoustic, which was recorded, as the name suggests, on 22nd January 2003 at the Hit Factory in New York City.

Hey Brian!
Looking forward to hearing Gov’t Mule soon!

Haven’t even finished listening to the show yet, but I thought I would post this before I forget to do it. I don’t know how (or why) I remember this, but Liza Minelli covered “Twist in My Sobriety” with the Pet Shop Boys. I looked it up on Allusic.com and it is on her “Results” album from 1989.
Lovers in a Dangerous Time performed by the Barenaked Ladies; written by Bruce Cockburn.

Yeah, I screwed that one up…maybe I should tag this show with a NSFW label.
Before anyone sends me any more email…I will correct this on the next show.
Thanks!
Brian,
Can you explain ‘Jonesing’ for us over the water please …
“Jonesing” is excitedly anticipating – or flat-out wanting. A strong need, desire or craving.
“I’ve been ‘jonesing’ for a piece of pizza all day.”
I have no idea where the term comes from.
Since you’ve already apologized for butchering one of my favorite artists names, I’ll tackle Jonesing. 1913 a comic strip came out “keeping up with the Joneses”, meaning you had to have what your neighbor has. Heroin became nicknamed “Jones” and when you need a fix you are “Jonesing”.
I’m not sure if Brian mentioned this (having not taken a listen to the podcast yet), but the name of Maroon 5’s previous group is called “Kara’s Flowers”.
I just discovered this podcast and it will soon become my favorite. I love cover songs — what a great idea for a show.
How about Johnny Cash coverinf Rusty Cage? That’s an excellent cover.
I had never heard of Tanita Tikaram before this podcast — I’ve checked out her album Ancient Heart and its great. Not the first time I’ve been introduced by some great artists from this podcast (and I’m a really new listener) Thanks, so much, Brian, for introducing me to such great music, great covers, and great artists in general. BTW: You’ve made it big! The Des Moines Register had an article about podcasting a few weeks ago and listed coverville as one to check out. I had never even heard of podcasting till that article (that has nothing to do with the fact that I live in Iowa — its more that I’m trying to catch up on some of my tech interests. . .). Would love to hear a cover of Night and Day. . .
Keith – I did mention it on the show, and I didn’t intend for people to think the “If I Fell” cover was done prior to their becomig Maroon 5. The track (as Adrian points out above) came from a CD (available on iTunes US) called 1.22.03 Acoustic, which was after they became Maroon 5.
Bill – thanks for the feedback! I’ll add Cash’s “Rusty Cage” to the request list.
Suzanne – While I really like “Ancient Heart”, I like her second album, “The Sweet Keeper” a bit more. I’d encourage anyone who liked “Twist in My Sobriety” to check out both albums. (“Ancient Heart” is available on iTunes US, but sadly, “Sweet Keeper” is not.)
Great show. It was my first love of music podcasts (We’ve only been dating a short time unfortunately). Anyhow Five words for you “William Shatner – Blur – Common People” Probably old news to you but I know alot of people haven’t heard it. Also just checking if you’ve checked out the “Music For Our Mother Ocean” albums. Great surf covers.
Re: Co-burn. I guess that proves you’re not from Canada !!
Love the podcast!
Have you ever heard the cover of the Madonna song “Like a prayer” (i think is the title) covered by the writer of the song?
Its different and cool!
Hey Brian,
GREAT show! SO nice to hear Phranc again! I haven’t heard her since the late 80’s. She’s really a kick, makes me want to bust out some of those old Phranc CDs and have a little Phranc marathon this weekend… Thanks again for one of the best podcasts on the ‘net!
Any chance I’ll hear any tracks off of “Honeymoon in Vegas” on the ‘cast anytime soon??
Eddie
Great show, Trina was quite a gem to hear. Been listening for a day and can’t get enough. One problem you may look at though is when all of this is added to my iTunes through iPodder the track tags all go consecutive but they are not from the same album. I thought it odd to see but maybe change the ID3 album title something annually updated(or anything well suited) and the song title to the date followed by the few things you usually list. Just a suggestion and it may seem odd but i’m quite the perfectionist with too much spent already on my iTunes.
Finally glad to hear a new way to bring new artists out too, I think its great how you always have just one song dedicated to an emerging artist.
Great castt

Brian:
Enjoyed the Beatles covers. I’ll let you in on a secret.
Bari Koral has a totally vamped-out version of “Can’t Buy Me Love” that was on her first self titled CD and on “Beatle Juice” which was a tribute album put out by a bunch of NY Based artists.

I’d be happy to arrange for you to get a copy of this song for the Podcast.
