The thing about these polls is that most people say what they think the appropriate answer is – remember all those polls that had Bohemian Rhapsody repeatedly voted as the best song ever, because, once there has been a poll, people just repeat it. Come to think of it, Rolling Stone compiled a top 500 songs of all time list a few years back and “Like a Rolling Stone” was voted number one. Yeah, right, what a coincidence.
I am an 80’s child and a massive 1985 fan and I still think “We built this city” is fantastic, and reminds me of that exact year. Here’s what my take on it was.

Bernie Taupin (writer of said worst song ever…has some form as a songwriter…) must be laughing all the way to the bank.
Love all these 10!
The main reason “worst of” lists like this one in Rolling Stone are usually rubbish is that we’ve mostly forgotten all the really bad songs (or at least, all the completely dull, unremarkable ones). There’s only maybe 10% of what was on the radio back then which is still familiar to the average punter.
Maybe it should be titled “The Worst 80s songs, from the ones we actually remember”, or maybe “The 80s hits which have become annoying in hindsight, as opposed to the ones that were always terrible which were quickly forgotten”.
P.S. Bobby McFerrin is an absolute champion!!
Brian:
This was a great show, YumYumOrange and the echoeing green are old favorites of mine. The Bloodsugars and ElectroFalco are finds, thanks great set it worked very well.
Personally I don’t care what Rolling Stone says, just a bunch of 60 something old hippies trying to stay relevent with stupid polls about music. When magazines cant find anything to fill their pages, they crate something to write about by taking a poll. Many of these songs were just overplayed by commercial radio, these covers prove that there was nothing wrong with the music, just the media machine that played them into the ground.
Traditional AM-FM broadcast radio is dying because its repetitive and insipid, not so with podcasts like Coverville, which are showcasing music and happily taking the power away from the mogels who used to dictate what is good and bad. I’ll make my own choice thank you and I choose to listen to Coverville , stay well
Harry – As RS said in its intro, Don’t blame the editors of RS. They didn’t make the list – this time.
Hey, Brian, I mentioned Coverville: http://blog.timesunion.com/rogergreen/we-built-this-alt_folk-city/2478/
The cover of “We Built This City” was awesome. Very timely, given the Occupy Wall Street & union unrest this year. Thanks Brian!
I have to laugh a bit at the results of this poll – I’m a definite 80s kid, and I loved all but 2 of these songs when they were out. The covers are fantastic – I especially liked the country twist on Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and the cover of We Built This City.
