Rooster sounds to cover curse words in Gin & Juice? First, you haven’t censored this song in the past (at least not last year) and if you feel it should be censored then maybe you shouldn’t play it in the first place. Second, a rooster sound is EXTREMELY ANNOYING, LIKE READING TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS. A quick fade would have been much better though again, you should either play it as-is or not play it at all.
Sorry, Mike – I’ve been (trying to) take out the f-bombs in ANY song I play on the show, but the rooster bleep was an experiment (inspired by the quack in Jonathan Coulton’s “Baby Got Back”). Sorry if it was jarring – I won’t use it again.
Oh, I thought the rooster was a band version. Didn’t mind it in theory, but it’s REALLY difficult to get the timing right. Yes, jarring.
And Over the Rainbow DOES make me teary. There, I said it.
Brian, is there anywhere to see the full list of songs in the Coverville Hall of Fame? I’m curious to see if one of the greatest covers of all, “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, is in there.
Brian includes the full list of Hall of Famers in the Countdown link. e.g.

Damn, I’d forgotten how good that version of Comfortably Numb is….
My opinion is that an occasional “fuck” is OK in a song, just don’t play a song where the word is a gimmick and used over and over (like Ceelo Green’s Fuck You). Maybe take a vote? And thanks for not using the rooster sound again – a quick fadeout would be preferable if you really want to take out the word.
Or you could go the route that NPR’s All Songs Considered went which is to put an “explicit” tag next to podcasts which included cursing or rap with the n-word.
And thanks for the link to the hall of fame entrants, some great music in there.
I’m going to go ahead and agree with some of the other commenters regarding profanity in songs. Let it go, it’s how the artist intended it to be experienced and one (of the many) reasons I don’t listen to conventional radio. Thanks for the great podcast.
Great show to lead us all into the 2011 Countdown, Brian. Many Thanks!!!
I have voted for “Bitches Ain’t Shit” by Ben Folds in the countdown, obviously because it’s a great cover that deserved to be up there again. But heaven knows what the rooster will make of that!!
My suggestion is what you used to do – warn at the start of the song. The AAC version has chapter points on each song, so easy to skip forward with little ears. I kind of don’t favour censorship as an option.
Sweet blessed mercy… I never have to hear Petra Haden ruin Journey again. I’m already sick of the original, and I never liked the cover. Glad it’s going on to the shelf.
As for cursing, meh… if there’s a warning, it’s ok by me!
I use the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole cover to put my babies to sleep because it’s so quiet and relaxing and whenever I hear it it totally DOES make me cry because it reminds me of my babies. 😛 The Jonathan Coulton cover though makes me cry from laughter…it’s so awesome. 🙂
