Wife suggested that a good closing song would have been Etta James’ cover/mash-up of “it’s a small world” off of the Music From the Park album.
These are some fun albums of Disney songs done in the style of different composers: Bibbidi Bobbidi Bach (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000070H), Heigh-Ho! Mozart (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000000709)
What about Gene Simmons’ version of “When You Wish Upon A Star?”
“Zipitty Doo Dah” is actually not from the theme parks, but from the movie “Song of the South”, which Disney has largely disowned and buried because it’s based around stories told by a former slave. It definitely pushes the envelope of what racial stereotypes we’re comfortable with in a kids’ movie these days.
That’s what I get for commenting while listening… you explained it right after the set was over. LOL. 🙂
Ok, now I’m back with some actually useful info to add!
The ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ music is called “Baroque Hoedown” and was written in the mid-60s by synth musicians Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley. Disney picked it up and orchestrated it for the parade, and the folks who wrote it had no idea it was being used there until one of them went to the park a couple of decades later.
Personally, I only knew the music from a small snippet that The Beatles used in one of their fanclub Christmas records. I actually never knew what it was until I heard this podcast… had no clue it was used by Disney or anything.
When I was a kid I had a record album that, I believe, had all of these songs on it. This episode was a blast to hear them all covered. I’m amazed how much it brought me back. Thanks for doing this show.
Besides the Monorail song, of course.
Beautiful show, Brian. Brian Wilson’s Disney album has a lot of nice choices too like When You Wish Upon a Star. Maybe for a bonus tracks episode?
