Ya know, chuck has his cousin berry to thank. If he hadn’t been at that enchantment under the sea dance, his career probably wouldn’t have taken off like it did.
Great Show!
So glad you used The Stones’ “Round and Round,” probably my favorite Chuck Berry cover.
One note: From my perspective the Marty Robbins cover of “Maybelline” isn’t as much a “cover-the-market” release as were, say, the Pat Boone records of Little Richard songs in the ’50s. I say that because Top 40 radio was playing Chuck Berry by the time “Maybelline” came out. At least, that was the case at WQXI in Atlanta, when I was growing up. And based on “The TAMI Show” video, it looks like it was the case nationwide.
Now, it could be that country stations played the Marty Robbins version at the same time Top 40 was playing Chuck Berry. I don’t know. I didn’t venture away from “Qwixie in Dixie” in those days.
So this was probably more a cover-the-country-market release than a cover-the-white-market release.
